Advantages of robot automation for HERMLE machining centers

Maximize spindle time through autonomous loading

A key objective of HERMLE automation with MAFU-SHERPA CNC Automation is to significantly increase spindle running time. Thanks to autonomous workpiece loading, your machines work without interruption - even at night and at weekends. This not only increases machine utilization, but also the overall efficiency of your production considerably.

Reduce personnel costs with higher productivity

MAFU-SHERPA automation solutions relieve your employees of repetitive, physically demanding tasks such as loading and unloading the machine. This frees up time for skilled tasks and at the same time increases the productivity of your production. Processes can be made more efficient through the targeted use of robots.

Consistent quality thanks to robot precision

The precise control and repeat accuracy of MAFU-SHERPA's robot solutions for HERMLE machines ensure that every Part is handled under identical conditions. This minimizes rejects, increases dimensional accuracy and ensures consistently high quality standards - even with complex geometries or sensitive materials.

Economical production

The automation solutions increase the cost-effectiveness of your production - regardless of batch size or component variance. The camera-supported approach eliminates the need for fixed fixtures, reduces set-up times and allows your HERMLE machine to be continuously utilized. This saves time and reduces costs.

Camera-controlled vs. HERMLE robot systems:
The system comparison

The MAFU-SHERPA vision technology intelligently recognizes workpieces - regardless of their shape or position. This eliminates the need for specific matrices or grid plates, which not only reduces costs, but above all greatly simplifies changeover.

In contrast to classic round or linear shelving systems, the SpaceBox offers a shape-independent, highly flexible storage solution. Parts are removed directly from the surface - ideal for changing parts or stackable blanks. The system can be integrated into your production in a space-saving and ergonomic way.

The MAFU-SHERPA robots are operated via an intuitive, dialog-guided user interface. None of the robot programming experience is required - All functions can be controlled via a touch display. This enables short training times and simple operation by your existing staff.

Retrofitting without HERMLE automation preparation

Automation of milling machines

The MAFU-SHERPA solution for HERMLE milling machines offers numerous advantages that enable particularly flexible integration into your existing machinery. The material feed is designed for both small and large workpieces. A turning station for backworking can be integrated as an option.

Flexible clamping and control options

Multiple clamping operations can be easily implemented on the large machine table - without the need for a zero-point clamping system: different clamping devices can be set up at any time. The automation is suitable for both stackable and non-stackable workpieces. Mechanical clamping Devices can also be used - None hydraulics or pneumatics are required. The solution is fully compatible with Siemens and Heidenhain controllers.

Automate existing machines without a robot interface

The solutions are specially designed to allow HERMLE machines without a factory-fitted automation interface to be fully retrofitted. Reliable signal communication is made possible via digital I/O, Profibus, Profinet or potential-free contacts - without having to make any changes to the machine control system.

Electric spindle drive for machines without rotary feed-through

For machines that do not have a rotary feed-through, an electrically operated solution for controlling Clamping Devices is available. This means that older machine types can also be reliably automated without the spindle having to be mechanically modified.

Universal connection to HERMLE control systems

Regardless of whether your HERMLE machine is equipped with a Heidenhain or Siemens control system - the systems can be connected flexibly and securely. Communication is implemented via standardized interfaces, ensuring high compatibility and process reliability.

Installation without machine manufacturer retrofit

The robot cells are designed to be completely autonomous and independent of the machine manufacturer. This means: No intervention in the machine mechanics, None cost-intensive upgrades from the OEM, None restrictions on the warranty. Installation is carried out by the MAFU-SHERPA technical team and is usually completed within a few days - even during ongoing production.

Raw Material Staging Concepts for HERMLE Production

Medium Batches: SpaceBox for medium series and plastics processing

image

The SpaceBox is a mobile storage device in the format of a Euro pallet (1,200 x 800 mm) - optimized for maximum use of space and minimum set-up times. The Raw Material Staging comprises up to 6 m² of usable space, distributed over up to 10 individually removable pull-outs. The system offers space for over 1,500 small parts per unit. Thanks to the integration of two SpaceBoxes, over 3,000 parts can even be stored in one robot cell - on just 12 m². The pull-outs are secured against unintentional extension and can be specifically controlled with the "MultiJob" function extension: Each pull-out can be assigned to an individual NC machining program. This makes the SpaceBox a versatile, intelligent buffer storage system - ideal for automated production with HERMLE machines.

Table Trolleys for prototyping and small series

image

The Table Trolleys is the ideal storage principle for prototypes, individual items or changing small batches. It can be loaded manually and simply docked onto the robot. The camera-supported part recognition system precisely locates the parts in the table area - even if they are placed in a variable arrangement. The Table Trolleys has a standard dimension of 1,000 x 600 mm. Special dimensions are available on request.

Pallets for heavy castings and large workpieces

image

If you want to automate large or heavy workpieces - such as cast parts, steel blocks or machine components weighing over 30 kg - you can rely on robust pallet solutions. These can be transferred individually or operated in an interchangeable system. Depending on the type of component, form-fit fixtures or stackable positioning systems are used. Thanks to the high load capacity of the SherpaLoader® models, even parts weighing up to 175 kg* can be automated without any problems. Special dimensions deviating from the standard dimensions (1,200 x 600 mm) are also available on request. *depending on workpiece center of gravity

Stacked Workpieces without die preparation

image

Many workpieces can be stacked - such as milled cuboids, sawn sections or flat blanks. You don't need a complex die for such applications: the Vision Systems detect the topmost part precisely and the robot picks it up reliably. Automated Machining of stacked parts reduces set-up costs, saves space and speeds up the flow of parts in your HERMLE production.

Industry expertise for HERMLE applications

The robot solutions support precise and stable processes for complex medical technology components - even with low tolerances and high process reliability requirements.

Whether small batch sizes or parts with many variants - MAFU-SHERPA robots automate precision mechanical parts safely and efficiently.
