DMG CMX 70 U - Automated 5-axis Machining with the SherpaLoader® M20

Robot-assisted machining to optimize the production process

Automated machining processes offer potential for increasing process stability, reducing manual intervention and improving machine utilization. Constant production conditions can be created through defined handling steps and repeatable component feeding. This video illustrates how the machining process of a DMG CMX 70 U is fully automated by integrating a SherpaLoader® M20.

Machining automation of the DMG CMX 70U

The material is supplied via two Table Trolleys, on which the raw parts are provided. The SherpaLoader® M20, mounted on a base to optimize accessibility, has two two-jaw parallel grippers for different setting options for raw and finished part handling. Parts are picked up using camera-based recognition technology, which detects the position and orientation of the workpieces on the material supply. The robot arm positions the first raw part on the alignment station. The blank is placed against a fixed stop on this station. This defined position is used to prepare for the subsequent clamping in the vice of the DMG CMX 70 U machining center. Automated alignment reduces variances in the workpiece position and supports the reproducibility of the Machining process. Before clamping, the vice is automatically cleaned with compressed air. The robot actuates the vice automatically with the integrated Torque wrench. The robot is also equipped with an actuator that reliably closes the machine room door. The machining process then starts on the DMG CMX 70 U. Meanwhile, the next raw part is already being prepared on the alignment station.

Maximized spindle runtime thanks to synchronous processes with the SherpaLoader® M20

As soon as Machining is complete, the SherpaLoader® M20 opens the machine room door using the actuator. The finished Machined Part is first cleaned with compressed air in the clamping state. The robot then releases the vice, removes the finished part with the finished part gripper and cleans the clamping point again. This prevents the accumulation of chip and lubricant residues in the clamping technology and contributes to the consistency of the clamping conditions. The previously prepared blank is then inserted into the cleaned vice and clamped automatically. The door is closed again and the next machining cycle begins. The removed finished part is placed back on the Raw Material Staging unit. The synchronized sequence of part handling and Machining reduces non-productive times. This procedure contributes to an increased spindle running time and improves the economic utilization of the machining center.

Access and operationally reliable automation on the DMG CMX 70 U

The complete automation of component handling minimizes manual intervention and reduces the potential for errors. At the same time, processing cycles are standardized and consistent component quality is ensured. To ensure safe operation of the automated production cell, the system is equipped with several safety-related devices. These include mechanical safety devices to protect against reaching in, crawling under and reaching over, a safely monitored light curtain with 30 mm resolution on the loading side for hand detection and a safely monitored inspection door at the rear of the system. In addition, the speed and position of the robot are continuously and safely monitored. These measures ensure operation in compliance with applicable safety guidelines and enable a safe production process with high availability.

Compatible with all
common CNC machines

With its universal interface, the SherpaLoader® can be connected to all standard lathes and
milling machines - regardless of their year of manufacture. This means that the same SherpaLoader®
can be used to retrofit an old machine or automate a new machine.
