Gildemeister CTX 420 linear - Automated CNC process with the SherpaLoader®T20

Robot integration in CNC automation with the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear

In modern production environments, the robot-supported use of automated handling systems enables consistent component quality with reduced non-productive times. The combination of SherpaLoader®T20 and the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear shown here creates a structured process chain from the removal of raw parts to the defined depositing of finished parts. The implementation of the automation unit in the production process of CNC machining ensures reproducible processes and relieves the strain on personnel during operation.

Efficient workpiece handling and CNC Machining on the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear

The raw parts are provided via a SpaceBox with up to ten drawers. The SherpaLoader® T20 opens the drawer automatically using an integrated actuator. The robot is also equipped with a Vision System, which it uses to detect the exact position of the raw parts on the Raw Material Staging. The camera-based detection system recognizes the position of the workpieces regardless of their position so that they can be removed precisely and with repeat accuracy. This reduces the need for manual material provision and component handling is independent of the exact position on the Raw Material Staging. The robot arm has a three-jaw centric gripper for raw parts and a two-jaw parallel gripper for removing finished parts. After position detection, the first raw part is picked up with the three-jaw gripper and positioned on an alignment station. The defined alignment of the workpiece reduces positional deviations in the clamping and increases dimensional accuracy in the Next machining process. The SherpaLoader®T20 then transfers the blank into the work area of the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear and the automation unit cleans the chuck of the MAIN SPINDLE with compressed air to remove chips and cooling lubricant residues. Cleaning ensures constant clamping forces and prevents unintentional positioning errors during clamping. After clamping, the first machining step begins. Meanwhile, the robot is already preparing the next raw part on the alignment station. Once the first machining step has been completed, the robot arm cleans the finished part and removes it from the counter spindle. The finished part gripper is equipped with rubberized attachments to prevent clamping marks or damage to sensitive component surfaces of finished parts. The SherpaLoader®T20 has already transferred the aligned Part into the working area of the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear and, after a further cleaning of the MAIN SPINDLE, clamps it in the chuck. The removed finished part is deposited back into the open SpaceBox. Once all the parts have been processed, the robot closes the SpaceBox drawer and opens the next one automatically. The continuous process without manual intervention reduces non-productive times and increases the effective spindle running time.

Process reliability and system monitoring in the automated production process with the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear

The complete automation of CNC Machining in the Gildemeister CTX 420 linear with the SherpaLoader®T20 enables consistently reproducible production with consistent quality. Camera-based detection, defined alignment stations and a clean transfer contribute to a stable process. The coordinated cycle between robot and machine reduces manual intervention and ensures more efficient use of machine runtime while always complying with the highest safety standards. The production cell is equipped with several safety systems. A closed enclosure limits the working area, while a light barrier prevents uncontrolled intervention during operation. In addition, the robot’s work area is protected by a monitored access door. These measures guarantee uninterrupted operation and ensure compliance with operational safety requirements.

Compatible with all
common CNC machines

With its universal interface, the SherpaLoader® can be connected to all standard lathes and
milling machines - regardless of their year of manufacture. This means that the same SherpaLoader®
can be used to retrofit an old machine or automate a new machine.
